Even when they went 15-1 prior to starting their postseason trek to Super Bowl 50, the Carolina Panthers have been often overlooked and hastily dismissed. Whether that be the smaller market they play in or the lack of sustained success outside of the past four years, it often seems as though the franchise is one of the NFL’s red-headed stepchildren at times.
Well, surprisingly enough, especially after a largely morbid 6-10 campaign, the Panthers are considered somewhat of a top threat for next season. Their championship hopes in 2016 were quickly gone, but their prospects for the next go-round are not yet forgotten.
On Monday, Westgate Las Vegas Super Book updated its Super Bowl LII odds and listed Carolina’s chances at a rather solid 20-1, the seventh-best for 2017. Accompanying the Panthers at the No. 7 spot in the opening odds were the Denver Broncos, Kansas City Chiefs and Oakland Raiders.
Coming out above head coach Ron Rivera and crew were the freshly-minted Super Bowl champion New England Patriots (6-1), Dallas Cowboys (10-1), Pittsburgh Steelers (10-1), Green Bay Packers (12-1), Seattle Seahawks (12-1) and NFC champion Atlanta Falcons (16-1).
These odds, obviously, dipped compared to last year’s openers for Carolina, which were set at 12-1 following their Super Bowl 50 loss to Denver. They are, however, considerably higher than in 2015 when the Panthers were listed at 60-1 following a 7-8-1 season.
